Interviewing for a Physician Opportunity

The impression you make on a prospective employer often determines whether or not you are likely to receive a job offer. Being well prepared is the key to a successful interview and it will reduce the stress levels that are sometimes associated with the interview process.
Prepare for the Interview
  • Research and familiarize yourself with facts and information about the company or institution.
  • Allow plenty of time and arrive a few minutes early for the interview.
  • Know the interviewer's full name and title as well as the correct pronunciation.
  • Dress appropriately in conservative business attire.
  • Find out why the prospective employer might be interested in your particular qualifications.
  • Think through your professional and personal strengths and how they will be an asset to the potential employer.
  • Decide how this position will impact your long-term career goals.
  • Prepare questions to ask to determine if this opportunity would be mutually rewarding. Having questions prepared shows sincerity and attention to detail.

The Interview
  • Greet your interviewer with a firm handshake and an enthusiastic and positive attitude.
  • Keep eye contact with the interviewer, listen attentively and be a good communicator.
  • During the interview, the interviewer will be trying to determine if you will be a good match for them. Likewise, the interview process allows you to decide if this opportunity would be a good career choice for you.
  • Be prepared with responses for the familiar questions "Tell me about yourself..." "What are your strengths and weakness?" "Why do think this is a good match for you?" Ask your Jordan Medical Consultant recruiter for a list of other potential interview questions.
  • Don't answer questions with simply yes or no. Provide short and to the point explanations but be truthful in your responses.
  • Make sure that you have a copy of your CV or resume with you. Be prepared to discuss reasons for job changes or gaps in your training or employment. Be honest and open when asked questions . . . don't be defensive.
  • Never bad mouth a current or past employer. Find a diplomatic way to explain personality or cultural differences.
  • Talk money last. The interviewer will usually bring it up but if not, wait until the end of the first full day of interviewing before asking, "Can we discuss the proposed financial package?"

Ending the Interview
  • If this is a position that you would like to have, let the interviewer know. Your enthusiasm will impress the interviewer.
  • If you feel that the interview is not going well, don't let it show. It may be just a test to judge your reaction. If forced to choose between two equally qualified candidates, employers will inevitably choose the candidate that expressed sincere interest.
  • Thank the interviewer for their time and consideration.

Telephone Interviews
As this process is becoming more common as a first step, here are some helpful tips:
  • Have a pen and paper handy.
  • Have a copy of your CV or resume.
  • Choose a quiet location without distractions.
  • Speak directly and clearly into the phone.
  • Ask informative questions and take notes.
  • Answer questions with brief but thorough answers.
  • Show your interest in the position and find out the next step in the interview process.
  • Be sure to take down the name of your contact and phone number and any specific details.

Complete the Interview
Follow up with a thank you note to key contacts and interviewers. Restate your interest in the job and why you would be a good fit.
