Relocating to a new city?
Resources

The Moving Guide has a wealth of information on planning your move.

The Neighborhood Finder will give you lists of areas to check out if you are looking for a neighborhood similar to the one in which you are currently living.

The City Reports are a great resource for city information as well as climate information and demographics.

The School Reports allow you research schools as well as tips on choosing a school and helping your children make the adjustment to their new school.

The Relocation Crime Lab offers crime statistics in hundreds of cities across the county.

The Salary Calculator is a great tool for comparing wages in cities across the country.

If, as a physician or medical provider, your career involves relocation to another city or state, there is almost always some stress involved with the anticipation of the move and the actual move. Planning in advance, especially if the move involves other family members, will help reduce some of the stress. Get input from all family members on their issues of concern related to the move so everyone is involved in the process.

Find out if your new employer will be covering any of the costs of your move. Ask the new organization if they have a relocation specialist on staff or if they can offer some moving assistance resources. Some organizations may have contracts or are able to negotiate better deals with moving companies that have a good reputation.

Sometimes, practices or hospitals will provide job search assistance for a spouse that may be looking for a position because of the move.

Another excellent resource is the local chamber of commerce. They often have welcome packages offering a wealth of information about the community including schools, banking, shopping, vehicle registration and types of parks and recreation.

Set up your timeline for the move.

--- Eight weeks - Begin checking with moving companies before the move for pricing, packing, loss coverage and delivery.

--- Four weeks - Set a date with the movers and clear out all the items you are not planning on taking with you. Have a garage sale or donate the items to charity.

--- Three weeks - ahead of the move send out change of address forms and gather medical and dental records. Make temporary housing arrangements if needed.

--- Two weeks - Notify the utility companies about disconnecting service and tie up loose ends.

--- One week - Transfer bank accounts, have your vehicles ready for the trip, have a way to stay in touch with movers, family members and your new employer.
